Challenger Brian Mitchell of South Africa knocked down champion Alfredo Layne of Panama three times in the 10th round to win the World Boxing Assn. junior lightweight title in a scheduled 15-round bout at Sun City, South Africa.
Mitchell, 128 1/2, ran his record to 29-2. Layne, 128, is 14-5-2.
