Israelis Celebrate Jewish New Year

JERUSALEM — Jews across Israel jammed stores and cooked traditional food Friday before beginning their celebration at sundown of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
Hundreds of police were on duty for the two-day holiday to prevent a possible terrorist attack on one of Judaism’s holiest days. They will be helped by border police and civil guard volunteers.
President Chaim Herzog delivered a New Year address on Israel radio marking the Jewish year 5747, calling the previous year a “turning point” in Israeli history.
“This year we have witnessed a distinct change for the better in the international position of Israel,” Herzog said, referring to Prime Minister Shimon Peres’ meetings with Moroccan King Hassan II and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
