Police in Bournemouth, England, evacuated a conference center and sealed off the city center early today in a full-scale security alert just hours before Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was due to deliver a major speech there. The alert came after a car crashed through a police barricade near a hotel where several senior members of Thatcher’s Conservative Party are staying in connection with the party’s annual convention. The driver was arrested, and police were deciding how to deal with a suspicious package inside the vehicle. Earlier, a satchel was thrown from another car near a second area hotel, but there was no explosion. Police were treating both incidents as possible terrorist episodes.
