College Roundup : Smoot Paces UCI Past Long Beach

Dan Smoot scored two goals Tuesday to help the eighth-ranked UC Irvine water polo team to a 4-3 upset over fifth-ranked Cal State Long Beach in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match played in Heritage Park Pool at Irvine.
Mike Halphide scored with 2:22 remaining to give the Anteaters (5-1 in conference, 8-6 overall) a 4-2 lead. Troy Junkin scored his second goal with 2:05 left to bring the 49ers to within one, 4-3, but Long Beach (2-2, 10-5) was unable to tie.
Irvine travels to Berkeley Friday to play second-ranked California.
In women’s volleyball:
Chapman 3, Cal State Los Angeles 2--Junior Janet Jenson had 21 kills to lead the Panthers to a 12-15, 15-4, 14-16, 15-7, 15-12, win over the 18th-ranked Golden Eagles in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Chapman.
Junior Tammy Light added 13 kills for the Panthers. Tina Lei led Cal State Los Angeles with 15 kills. Chapman is 8-12, 1-2 in the conference.
