Bomb Squad Bombs Out on a Bundle of Kittens

RAMONA — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad blew up a parcel Monday that they feared was a bomb. The package contained four kittens.
Three of the four kittens were killed in the blast, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said. The survivor was taken to a veterinarian, where staff members named it “Lucky.”
The taped box, with holes punched in the side, was discovered at 8:23 a.m. Monday at the back door of the Home Savings and Loan office on Main Street, the spokeswoman said.
An X-ray of the box indicated that it contained a living creature, but arson investigators were unable to determine what kind of animal was inside, the spokeswoman said. Because of a recent case in Ramona in which a box containing a rattlesnake was left in a woman’s driveway, the bomb squad decided to destroy the package.
A small charge was attached to the box and detonated. After the explosion, the investigators discovered Lucky and the remains of the kittens, the spokeswoman said.
