Aides and a relative of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s chosen successor have been arrested on suspicion of murder, kidnaping and underground activities, Iran’s official news agency reported. The agency said that Mehdi Hashemi, former head of Iran’s Global Islamic Movement, and some unidentified associates have been arrested. Hashemi was identified as a relative of the Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri, whom Muslim authorities have picked to eventually succeed Khomeini. The Moujahedeen, Iran’s main underground opposition group, last week reported arrests in what appeared to be a growing power struggle in Iran’s clerical leadership.
