Lawsuits Soar in China

PEKING — Increased business activity and greater legal awareness has prompted a sharp rise in the number of civil suits brought before China’s courts, the official Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily said. China’s courts handled more than 800,000 civil cases in 1985, compared with 200,000 to 300,000 cases annually in the late 1970s.
