Authorities now say that nine people were critically injured but no one was killed when a car being chased by the U.S. Border Patrol sped through the San Ysidro Port of Entry and hit a group of pedestrians on the Mexican side of the border. First reports of two people having been killed in the weekend accident were wrong, said Border Patrol spokesman Bob Gilson. He said all of the injured were from Mexico. Two Mexicans, including the driver of the car, were arrested by Mexican customs officials. Border Patrol units began chasing the car on the U.S. side because they believed that illegal aliens were in the vehicle. The Border Patrol said its agents backed off the chase, which reached 80 m.p.h., about a quarter-mile north of the border crossing.
