RALEIGH — In the senate race, Gov. Terry Sanford, a Democrat, was projected to defeat Republican Jim Broyhill, who was appointed to the Senate after the suicide of Sen. John East.
Public opinion polls conducted last week showed the candidates running about even, and President Reagan visited the state for a third time to boost Broyhill, 59, heir to a furniture fortune and 24-year veteran in Congress.
