NASA Won’t Release Crew Cabin Photos, Cites Feelings of Kin

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA today rejected requests by several news organizations that it release photos of the space shuttle Challenger’s shattered crew cabin that were taken before and after recovery.
In turning down the requests, made under the Freedom of Information Act, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said only that it was considering the sensibilities of the families of the seven crew members killed in the Jan. 28 explosion.
The pictures reportedly show the debris scattered on the ocean floor and in a storage building.
Reporters were given a last look today at other Challenger wreckage before it is stored in two underground missile silos here in January.
