About 15,000 survivors returned to the desolate site of Colombia’s worst natural disaster to pay homage to the 23,000 who died under a volcanic avalanche of mud a year ago. The first anniversary of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano eruption was marked by a memorial Mass and a homily read by Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo at the foot of a cement cross erected during the visit of Pope John Paul II last July.
