Cheers to public television for the superb “Shadowlands.” There won’t be better writing or two more talented and beautifully modulated performances on the tube this year than those of Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom. Yes, it came from the BBC and was one of those small, thoughtful yet memorable dramas that American television seems unable or unwilling to produce. Its audience share was probably infinitesimal, no reviewer will extol its virtues, nor will Emmy nominators remember it. But it is precisely this kind of unheralded gem which has kept me a KCET subscriber for 17 years. I couldn’t bear the thought that someone out there in the “wasteland” wasn’t offering this type of programming.
