Extra Freeway Lane Studied

In an attempt to increase freeway capacity inexpensively, the Orange County Transportation Commission voted Monday to study the feasibility of restriping 12 miles of the Orange Freeway to create a fifth lane in each direction.
In part, the $10,000 study will seek to determine if the freeway’s shoulder area is structurally sound enough to support daily traffic loads, according to OCTC spokesman Tom Fortune.
The study, which also will estimate the cost and potential financing for such a project, is scheduled to be completed by March 31, Fortune added.
