The NHL : Jets Rally in the Final Period and Put Out the Flames, 4-3

CALGARY, Alberta — Dave Ellett’s 45-foot slap shot capped a four-goal third period Thursday night and rallied the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Ellett’s shot from just inside the blue line at 13:45, Winnipeg’s fourth straight power-play goal, made the Jets 3-0 against the Flames this season.

Trailing, 3-0, entering the final period, the Jets drew to within 3-1 at 6:24 on Dale Hawerchuk’s 14th goal of the season.

Mario Marois brought Winnipeg within 3-2 with his first goal of the season, a 40-foot slap shot on the power play past goalie Mike Vernon at 9:24.

Bill Derlago tied the score with a goal at 11:49.

The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the first period in which Calgary outshot the Jets, 18-14. Joe Mullen snapped an 11-game scoring drought when he fired a 20-foot wrist shot past Winnipeg goalie Daniel Berthiaume on the short side for a power-play goal at 14:46.

Calgary outshot the Jets, 19-6, in the second period, increasing its lead to 3-0.

Mullen scored his second of the game and eighth of the season when he banged in Jim Peplinski’s rebound at 6:12. Steve Bozek scored his sixth goal of the season at 8:38.
