Morris Broderson’s paintings resemble the kind of stuff you might find adorning the bedroom walls of a 12-year-old girl with very bad taste. His is a Renaissance Pleasure Faire aesthetic and visions of Pre-Raphaelite damsels, virginal maidens and ballerinas dance in his head. A series well suited to Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood titled “Children’s World” serves up bunnies, building blocks and teddy bears, while other series find Broderson focusing on floral arrangements and porcelain dolls. Four crisply executed architectural renderings offer a refreshing break from the emotional bombast that colors the surrounding work, which is for the most part clumsily painted. More troublesome than his uneven technical skills is the fact that his work is a celebration of shopworn cliches. A painting of a melancholy clown is the cherry atop this sticky-sweet sundae.
