VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico — Tourism Minister Antonio Enriquez Savignac said Monday that more than 4 million foreign tourists have visited Mexico so far this year, spending some $500 million.
Enriquez Savignac said the figures are a success for the Mexican tourism industry, which has faced what he called a “media campaign that distorted the situation in the country.”
The tourism minister said the campaign portrayed Mexico as “unstable and violent because of drug trafficking.”
Tourism is also thought to have suffered from the effects of twin killer earthquakes that struck Mexico City on Sept. 19 and 20 of last year.
