TEHRAN — A convicted murderer was hanged for 30 seconds but escaped with his life because the father of the victim pardoned him, the Iranian newspaper Kayhan reported Thursday.
The unidentified man who survived the gallows Wednesday will be freed after recovering in a hospital in the western city of Zanjan, the newspaper said.
Under Iranian interpretation of Islamic law, close relatives of a murder victim have the right to demand execution of the murderer or payment of “blood money,” or to forgive the person.
