Beverly Hills Students to Aid Bereaved Athlete

The Beverly Hills High School athletic department and the student council will raise money for Jamaal Brown, a 17-year-old Buena High School basketball player whose family was killed in a traffic accident Dec. 11 after a game in Beverly Hills.

“It was a very shocking thing and hence our students want to get involved in helping out,” Assistant Supt. Walther Puffer said.

He said that a student dance and possibly other activities will be held to raise money for a scholarship fund for Brown.

Brown’s mother, brother, grandfather and girlfriend were fatally injured when their car collided head-on with a wrong-way driver on the Ventura Freeway in Agoura as they returned home from the basketball game.

Recognized License Plate

Brown, whose team bus became caught in the traffic snarl created by the accident, recognized his mother’s license plate, got off the bus and ran to the wreckage. He was restrained by officers.

Suzanne Brown, 37, of Ventura; her father, Jack Rawls, 69, and Dia Rae Rounds, 16, Brown’s girlfriend, were dead at the scene. Jonah Brown, 7, died a short time later at Westlake Community Hospital.

Beverly Hills Supt. Leon Lessinger said that donations could be made to the Jamaal Brown Scholarship Fund, in care of Security Pacific Bank, P.O. Box 27577, Los Angeles 90027.

“The boy has been accepted to Stanford, but he will have financial problems,” Lessinger said.

Last week, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office filed four counts of second-degree murder against Daniel E. Murray, 25, of Lancaster in connection with the wrong-way collision.

Tests revealed that the alcohol level in Murray’s blood was .19%, almost twice the legal limit of .10%.
