COLUMBIA, S.C. — U.S. servicemen around the world received 57 tons of holiday mail from total strangers this year under a project organized by a Vietnam veteran who remembers the hollow feeling of sitting through mail call without getting a letter.
Organizer William Herrmann said Thursday that people mailed cards, letters, cookies, artificial Christmas trees, wreaths and other gifts to 47,000 servicemen at 35 military installations.
Herrmann started the Military Mail Project in 1983 by encouraging people to send letters to Marines in Beirut.
