A Los Angeles union official accused of accepting bribes to obtain business for non-union trucking companies pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court on Friday to charges of mail fraud, receiving an illegal payment and tax evasion.
U.S. District Judge David V. Kenyon accepted the guilty pleas from Tim Clinton Williams, 45, of El Monte, in a plea agreement on charges contained in two federal grand jury indictments returned in June and August of last year. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 6.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Leon W. Weidman said that Williams, a business agent for Los Angeles Teamsters Local 598, received about $40,000 in bribes from 1981 to 1984 to help non-union trucking companies get business from union companies whose employees he represented.
