Culver City : Council OKs $65,000 for Float

The City Council on Monday agreed to appropriate $65,000 for the city’s float in the 1988 Rose Parade, but officials said they may increase the allocation if volunteers can raise more private funds.
The Culver City Rose Float Assn., which arranges for fund-raising and construction of the float, had asked the city for $75,000 because they said Festival Artists, the float builder, may request more money. The association reimburses the city for half of the float’s cost with private funds.
Mayor Paul A. Netzel said he favored appropriating the extra $10,000 but council members Richard M. Alexander, Paul A. Jacobs and Jozelle Smith opposed an immediate increase. The council later agreed to consider increasing the amount if the association can raise half of the $10,000.
Andrew Weissman, head of the association, presented the council with a check for $32,500, the association’s share for the 1987 float, which depicted a movie crew filming a jungle scene with Tarzan.
Culver City’s 1986 float, “Kings of Comedy,” was awarded a prize from Rose Parade officials. This year’s entry, however, did not win.
