Trapped Horses Rescued After Trailer Overturns

Orange County firefighters, using a massive hydraulic prying device, rescued two horses trapped Thursday in an overturned trailer on Santiago Canyon Road, authorities said.
The trailer overturned about 4:30 p.m. after the hitch attaching it to a vehicle driven by Susan Kari Swallow, 33, of Anaheim came loose, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
CHP vehicles, three fire engines, a fire truck and a paramedic unit rushed to the 20600 block of Santiago Canyon Road, in Orange Park Acres.
Concerned that the frightened horses would injure themselves, authorities administered tranquilizing drugs before attempting to free them.
After about 30 minutes, the prying device was used to remove the top of the trailer and the horses were taken out safely, Fire Department spokeswoman Kathleen Cha said. One suffered minor injuries.
