The Captain of Capitalism is, and was, a dangerous man. The disastrous trade deficit we have, particularly with Japan, is partly because of Friedman’s economic teaching. I exchanged letters with him and finally met him several years ago. I told him why he is so dangerous:
“Brezhnev was reviewing a military parade in Moscow. He saw a bunch of civilians marching among the soldiers and asked his aide, ‘Who are those civilians?’ ‘Those are economists,’ he was told. ‘They do more damage than tanks and missiles.’ ”
