‘Contadora Can Work, if--’

Lowenthal’s article, “Facing the Ugly Facts in Nicaragua” was itself ugly in its deceitful avoidance of the facts. He begins with the basic assumption that Nicaragua is an undemocratic regime ignoring the elections there in 1984, which were lauded by most Western observers as being among the fairest ever in Central America.
He also conveniently ignores the fact that Nicaragua has consistently agreed to the elimination of foreign intervention as far back as September, 1984, when they accepted the terms of the Contadora draft treaty. It was the United States that rejected this peace initiative.
It is time for Lowenthal to accept the fact that the democracy that exists in Nicaragua has irrevocably broken U.S. hegemony in Central America. The masses there are going to get a piece of the action in spite of his wishful thinking. Poverty, illiteracy, and the rule of oppressive U.S.-controlled oligarchies will be ended.
Come on, professor, let us stop breaking our OAS Treaty requirements and give Nicaraguans their well-earned right of self-determination.
