Nick Thometz broke Eric Heiden’s track record of 38.03 seconds in the 500 meters of a World Cup speed skating event at Lake Placid, N.Y. Thometz, of Minnetonka, Minn., had a time of 38.01 seconds.
Bonnie Blair of Champaign, Ill., leading the World Cup women’s standings with 150 points, won the 500 meters in 40.90, and Katie Class of St. Paul, Minn., won the 1,500 meters in 2:15.23.
