Chicago’s wealthy MacArthur Foundation awarded $5.7 million in grants to family-planning efforts, including $200,000 to make a soap opera about two brothers in Kenya that foundation officials hope will lead people in developing countries to control population growth. New York’s Center for Population Communications International is producing the soap opera about one brother with 13 children and the other with three. Center president David O. Poindexter said Friday the program will be based on the “tele-novela” format used by Mexico’s Televisa network, which aired a 1977-78 series about family planning that was credited with a 13% decline in Mexico’s growth rate.
