Rosemead : Schools Gear for Lawsuit

The Garvey School District Board of Education, contemplating the possibility of future litigation against the Alhambra City and High School Districts, has set aside $42,000 to pay attorney John Huerta for legal advice he may provide in 1987.

The Alhambra district, which serves Alhambra, San Gabriel and parts of Rosemead and Monterey Park, has narrowed its search for a new high school to three sites, all in the Garvey district’s territory in the southern part of Rosemead. More than 100 houses and duplexes would have to be demolished if any of the three sites is selected.

The Garvey district operates elementary and intermediate schools in Rosemead, San Gabriel and Monterey Park, and students from the district attend high schools in the Alhambra district.

Rosemead residents have argued that since most of the population growth in the high school district is occuring in Monterey Park and Alhambra, the new high school should not be built in Rosemead. Many residents on the west side of the district also oppose any Rosemead site, saying that the school should be in Monterey Park.

The Garvey district board has taken no formal action for or against any site, but the Rosemead City Council has adopted a resolution opposing construction of a new high school anywhere in the city.
