The World : Greeks Protest U.S. Bases

More than 15,000 Greeks marched through the center of Athens to the American Embassy to demand an end to nuclear testing and the removal of four U.S. military bases from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization country. The march was sponsored by four Communist- and Socialist-backed peace movements and more than 100 local labor unions and peace groups, organizers said. Police closed off traffic in the city’s center and surrounded the embassy compound during the three-hour protest while the demonstrators chanted “Out with the American bases!” and “Reagan, fascist, murderer!”
