College Baseball : USIU Opens Season With Sweep of Pacific

SAN DIEGO — United States International University swept a doubleheader from University of the Pacific in the Gulls’ baseball season opener Saturday afternoon.
USIU won the first game, 5-4, as pitcher Mike Poteet gave up four unearned runs for the victory. In the second game, the Gulls used a seven-run fourth inning on their way to a 13-5 victory over the Tigers (0-2). Dean Weese recorded the victory.
USIU’s Opie Moran was 3 for 5, including a home run, 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Teammate John Ronis was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.
The teams meet today at 1 at USIU.
In other action:
Hawaii Pacific 8-8, UC San Diego 4-1--Hawaii Pacific swept a nonconference double header from UCSD at La Jolla. In the first game, Jayme Gipaya was 2 for 3 to lead Hawaii Pacific (2-0). Destry Carvalho and Daren Akiyama both went 2 for 4 to lead Hawaii Pacific, an NAIA team, in the second game.
