Senior center Chris Barnes came off the bench to score 17 points and grab 14 rebounds Friday night as Whitney High School of Cerritos successfully defended its Small Schools Division boys’ title with a 53-44 win over Hesperia Christian at Biola University.
The 6-foot 5-inch Barnes, who normally starts but was benched at the start of the game for disciplinary reasons by Coach Bruce Carlisle, also blocked five shots. He was 7 of 10 from the field, including a nifty three-foot turnaround for a basket that put Whitney on top for good, 37-35, with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The game was not pretty. The teams committed 33 turnovers. Hesperia Christian (23-3), which held a 29-25 halftime lead, connected on only 19 of 53 field goal attempts. Whitney (24-2) hit 23 of 57 field goal attempts.
