OSLO — A supersonic U.S. SR-71 reconnaissance plane made an emergency landing Saturday at Stavanger in western Norway after developing engine problems, a U.S. Embassy official said Wednesday.
“The plane’s crew radioed in early on Saturday morning to report they were experiencing engine problems, requiring an emergency landing,” the official told reporters.
The twin-jet aircraft, also known as the Blackbird, was whisked immediately after landing into a military hangar at Stavanger airport, where it is being repaired under close guard.
Norwegian military sources said the plane was in international airspace off western Norway when its two-man crew requested the unscheduled landing.
