HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Simi Valley’s 7 Homers Barely Enough, 17-14

Compiled by Ed Hagerott

Simi Valley High Coach Mike Scyphers knew life without Scott Radinsky wouldn’t be easy, but he never imagined he’d see a game like the one he saw Saturday.

Simi Valley tied a school record with seven home runs but they almost weren’t enough for the Pioneers, who defeated El Segundo, 17-14, in the seventh-place game of the 32-team El Segundo tournament.

While watching Simi Valley hitters knock the ball over the fence, Scyphers also watched four of his pitchers allow nine hits, 10 walks and hit two batters.

“We’ve scored in the teens quite a bit,” Scyphers said. “But we haven’t had other teams do it to us. I can’t remember the last time we gave up that many runs.”

While Simi Valley (5-1) doesn’t have a pitcher the caliber of Radinsky, now in the White Sox organization, Scyphers doesn’t think Saturday’s game is indicative of his team’s future.

“Our pitching was decimated,” Scyphers said. “We’ve played five games in six days.”

Simi Valley led, 10-2, after the top of the fourth, but nearly blew that advantage before Scott Sharts put the game out of reach with home runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Don Ciannone, Tim Laker, Darren Lloyd and Marcus Lockwood also homered to tie the single-game record set in 1981 against Thousand Oaks.

In the consolation championship, Crespi used a hit, three walks and a hit batter to score four runs in the second inning then held on to beat Arcadia, 5-3.

In other tournament action, Greg Struhle, Bob Grandpre and Matt Franco hit home runs to lead Westlake to an 11-2 win over West Torrance in the third-place game of the consolation bracket.

Westlake (3-2) used an error and four hits, including Struhle’s three-run home run, to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Franco was 2 for 4 and is now 11 for 15 for the season. Struhle (2-0) pitched the first four innings and lowered his earned-run average to 1.80.
