HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : TRACK : Watts Wins 2 Events as Taft Coasts

Co-Coaches Tom Stevenson and Mel Hein had defending state champion Taft High take it easy in a West Valley League track meet against Canoga Park on Friday because some of their runners are competing in today’s Northridge-Alemany invitational meet. But the Toreadors still dominated, winning 11 of 13 events in a 108-14 win at Taft.
Junior Quincy Watts, the defending state champion in the 200 meters, won the 100 meters in 10.7 and the 220-yard dash in 21.9.
Double winners for Taft (3-0, 1-0) included Marlon Rodriguez in the triple jump (41-11) and mile (4:56.3), and Darryl Smith in the 110-yard high hurdles (16.7) and 330 intermediate hurdles (44.0). One of the closest competitions was in the long jump, where Taft’s Lawrence Killens jumped 21-6 to edge Mike Conover of Canoga Park (0-3, 0-1) by four inches.
The Taft girls also won easily, beating Canoga Park 87 1/2 to 25 1/2. Sureak Woods won the 100 meters (13.0), the 440 (1:05.6), finished second in the long jump (15-10) and anchored the winning 440 relay team to lead Taft (3-0, 1-0). Tracy Wilson set a school record in the shotput with a mark of 36-3, breaking the record of 36-2 set by Crystal Knight in 1980.
Jack Swan won the shotput (50-8) to lead El Camino Real to a 93-33 win over Cleveland in a West Valley League meet. . . . In the girls meet, Vicki Gurney won the shotput (39-7 3/4) to lead El Camino Real to a 77-23 win.
San Fernando’s Shelton Boykin placed first in the 120 high hurdles (14.3) and the 330 intermediate hurdles (40.1) as San Fernando defeated Monroe, 88-37, at San Fernando in a Mid-Valley League opener for both schools. David Sals of San Fernando (2-1 overall) won the 100 meters (10.9) and the 220 (22.1). . . . Donald Levy finished first in both the 100 (11.02) and 200 (22.44) to lead Granada Hills to a 64-59 North Valley League track and field win over Van Nuys at Granada Hills. Ian Alsen won the 1,600--meters (4:33.9) for Granada Hills (3-0). The Granada Hills’ girls team won, 70-25.
Mike Ross finished first in the 120 high hurdles (16.1), the 330 low hurdles (42.6) and the long jump (19-11) to lead Poly to a 106-21 win over Grant in both teams’ East Valley League opener.
