UCLA Takes Opening Game from USC, 11-6

Torey Lovullo got four hits and drove in four runs to lead UCLA to an 11-6 victory over USC in the opener of their three-game Pacific 10 Southern Division series Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Lovullo, the Bruins’ senior second baseman, hit a two-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning that gave UCLA a 9-3 lead. It was Lovullo’s 14th homer, tops in the nation.
In all, the Bruins hit three homers, giving them 53 in 29 games. Freshman first baseman Bob Hamelin hit a towering drive to center to open the fourth inning. Eric Karros homered to lead off the fifth inning.
The victory, UCLA’s 11th straight over USC, improved the Bruins’ Pac-10 record to 9-4 (19-9-1 overall). They are in second place behind Stanford (5-2).
USC, which stranded 14 baserunners, is 6-3 in league play and 21-10 overall.
