San Diego High School Baseball : Mount Carmel Holds Off Patrick Henry

Mount Carmel High School won its 11-straight game Monday, edging Patrick Henry, 6-5, in a Lions’ Tournament AAA Division game at Santana.

Mount Carmel (11-2) took a 6-0 lead through the fifth as Mike Limtiaco singled three times with an RBI and John Tejcek singled twice to drive in three runs. But Patrick Henry came back, scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth off starting pitcher Ed VanAlstyn (5-0).

Relief pitcher Ron Kelly entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded, but got out of the inning without allowing a run. Kelly had to pitch out of another jam in the seventh, as Patrick Henry again loaded the bases but could not score.

“We’ve been interesting,” said Sam Blalock, Mount Carmel coach. “We left 15 men on base and had 14 hits, but still managed to win in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded. At least we keep things exciting.”

In other Lions’ Tournament games: AAA Division

Santana 8, Madison 6--RBI singles by Bill Reed, Jason Cabral and Raul Padilla highlighted a four-run fourth inning for host Santana (10-4). Madison rallied in the seventh when Chris Hansen and Ron Mendiola scored on a throwing error to first. Later in the inning, Greg Chrones scored on a wild pitch.

Granite Hills 14, Southwest 1--Kurt Southworth hit his second home run in two tournament games as host Granite Hills (9-3) won easily. Scott Friar had a three-run homer for the Golden Eagles, and Donnie Carroll had a single, triple and an RBI.

Point Loma 2, Vista 0--Jeff Gattis and Rigo Beltran combined to pitch a three-hit shutout in a game played at Granite Hills. Judd Franklin drove in both runs for Point Loma.

Morse 6, Sweetwater 2--Morse (7-7) scored four runs after two were out in the sixth to beat Sweetwater at Helix. With two out, Joel Lager walked and scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Mike Smith.

Montgomery 10, Monte Vista 3--Emilio Camarena doubled twice to drive in two runs and lead Montgomery (9-6) in a game played at Poway. In addition to being the winning pitcher, Eduardo Torres had a single and a triple and scored twice.

AA Division

Fallbrook 17, Castle Park 5--T.J. Flynn hit his ninth home run of the season and his sixth in his last five games, as Fallbrook (10-3) overpowered Castle Park at El Capitan. Mark Ringkamp hit a three-run homer and drove in another run with a single. Dave Garland added a two-run shot in the sixth. Winning pitcher Scott Hainline (2-0) also went 2 for 4, driving in four runs.

Grossmont 6, Serra 2--Rick Twyman and Gregg Layson each had two RBIs and two runs for Grossmont (10-3). Roy Neder (2-1) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven.

Briefly: Orange Glen 10, Valhalla 4; Mission Bay 5, Bonita Vista 2.

A Division San Diego 15, La Jolla Country Day 1--Armando Ramirez struck out nine and pitched a five hitter for San Diego (10-3-1). Tony Farrell and Sean Tucker both went 3 for 4, driving in two runs each.

Mar Vista 3, University City 1--Todd Habel pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine to get the victory for Mar Vista. Arturo Suarez was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Teammate Juan Tapia was 2 for 3 with a runs scored.
