Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson met with Commissioner Peter Ueberroth and said baseball must embark on a plan to hire minorities for executive jobs.
“We seek to have a committee of owners established and we seek a pool of ex-players,” Jackson said after the meeting. “We seek to put forth a plan with a timetable. There must be numbers established, and goals, and benchmarks and enforcement procedures.”
Previously, Jackson called for a boycott of major league games if baseball fails to change those practices, but with Ueberroth he struck a conciliatory tone, saying he is confident of change.
