Tennis Roundup : Lendl and Mecir Win Easily at Hamburg; Nystrom Upset

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia lost only three games for the second straight day in breezing into the quarterfinals of the $375,000 German Open tennis tournament Thursday at Hamburg, West Germany.

Lendl, the world’s No. 1-ranked player, beat 48th-ranked Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 6-2, 6-1, in just 75 minutes.

Second-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia also was a straight-set winner, ousting countryman Milan Srejber, 7-6, 6-3.

But Eduardo Bengoechea of Argentina, ranked 86th in the world, upset sixth-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden 7-6, 6-3.

Top-seeded Chris Evert dominated Camille Benjamin, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round of the $150,000 Eckerd Tennis Open at Largo, Fla.

Evert was in command from the start against the world’s 75th-ranked player, racing out to a 4-1 lead and then holding serve the rest of the way to win the first set. In the second set, Evert took a 4-0 lead and coasted to the win.

Freshman Andrew Sznaidjer of Pepperdine defeated UCLA’s Dan Nahirny in the No. 1 singles match and teamed with Robby Weiss for a doubles win to lead the Waves over the Bruins, 5-3, in a nonconference tennis match at the L.A. Tennis Center.

The match concluded the regular season for Pepperdine (19-5) and UCLA (20-7). Both teams will be in the NCAA playoffs, which start May 15 at Athens, Ga.
