India, Afghanistan OK New Banking, Trade Arrangements

NEW DELHI — Afghanistan, seeking to re-establish links with its neighbors in the subcontinent, has agreed to set up direct banking arrangements and widen trade with India, the Times of India newspaper reported Tuesday.
The newspaper, quoting news agency reports from Kabul, said the decisions were made during a three-day trip to the Afghan capital by Indian External Affairs Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari.
The reports said that Tiwari, the highest ranking Indian official to visit Kabul since the Soviet invasion in 1979, also reached agreement on selling Afghanistan 200 Indian-made cars and jeeps.
In addition, India is to help Afghanistan on construction projects and joint industrial ventures, the reports said.
