Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and members of his Labor Alignment voted to uphold Israel’s coalition government despite their campaign to force early elections. The apparently paradoxical move hinged on Labor’s inability to gain a majority in the Knesset (Parliament) to topple the government. The votes came on four motions of no-confidence sponsored by small, left-wing parties. The parties accused Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and his Likud Bloc of bringing the Mideast peace process to a halt and discriminating against Arabs by supporting lower college fees for military veterans.
