STAT WATCH : Crespi Adds Offense to Late-Season Push

At midseason,Crespi had a .220 team batting average and was winning because of pitching and defense. When the Celts began hitting well, they became nearly unbeatable. Crespi (19-5-1), ranked No. 1 in Valley by The Times, finished the season with a .320 team average.

All eight starters--Matt Arnold, Greg Barton, Dave Cameron, Chris Greenamyer, Ken Franco, Pat Murphy, Joe Testa and Kevin Thomas--batted .300 or better. . . . Birmingham has a .362 team batting average. The Braves, led by Damon Buford (.444), have five players batting .400 or better and seven at .300 or better.

Hitting: Rex McMackin of Chatsworth had 23 hits in West Valley League games, one short of the school record. Robert Roseboro had 24 last season. McMackin, whose 20-game hitting streak was stopped last week, finished the regular season batting .521. . . . Westlake’s Matt Franco had 41 hits and batted .519 during the regular season to break his own school records. . . . Tim Laker and Greg Gerber of Simi Valley each had 40 regular-season hits.

Drop zone: Calabasas was considered the preseason Frontier League favorite, but the Coyotes (6-11, 5-7) finished third. They dropped five of their last seven games because they dropped the ball a lot. The Coyotes committed 36 errors in league play, and 53 of the 123 runs they allowed were unearned. . . . Burroughs committed 101 errors in 21 games. . . . Hart committed six errors in its 6-5 loss to Schurr last week.

Pitching: Canyon pitchers Travis Regnolds and Ken Sollom both have five complete games and a 2.68 earned-run average. . . . Regnolds has 111 strikeouts, third in the Valley behind Sylmar’s Olonzo Woodfin (127) and Providence’s Jeff Cirillo (118). Crespi’s Chris Spears has 96 strikeouts.

Streaks: Montclair Prep won its fifth straight Alpha League title and Frank Charles, Jeff Light and Scott Hauser played large roles in championship No. 5. Charles has hit a school-record eight home runs and has 15 in his career. Light hit seven and has 14 in his career. Hauser (8-0) hasn’t lost a varsity game; he was also 8-0 last season. . . . Saugus has won 10 straight games to gain its second straight Golden League championship. . . . Hart is 16-2 in games in which the Indians have scored at least five runs.

Softball: El Camino Real finished the regular softball season with a 15-0 record and won the West Valley League title for the fifth straight season. The Conquistadores have won 70 consecutive games, the nation’s second-longest winning streak ever. The all-time record is 112 wins by Vandebilt Catholic High in Louisiana from 1980-83.

Track and Field: Thousand Oaks’ versatile Sharon Manship has the Valley-area’s best marks in the 300-meter low hurdles (42.7) and the triple jump (37-11 3/4).

She also ranks fourth in the 100 low hurdles (14.86) and 800 (2:19.0), is tied for sixth in the high jump (5-4), ranks seventh in the long jump (17-2) and ninth in the 200 (26.1).
