French Open : Upsets in Paris: Edberg, Mandlikova Ousted

PARIS — Eric Winogradsky fooled everyone except himself.

Winogradsky, who had never faced anyone in the top 50, upset third-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 7-6, 7-6, 7-5, Wednesday in the second round of the rain-soaked French Open at Paris.

“I thought I had a little chance if it rained a lot, if the court was heavy and if I played very well,” said the 21-year-old Frenchman whose ancestors are from the Soviet Union. “There were a lot of ifs.

“He does not send everything back from the baseline, which suited me. The rallies were short, which also suited me. I think my game bothered him.”

In a major upset in women’s play, Nathalie Herreman of France took out fourth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 7-6.

Ranked 152nd in the world and only No. 9 in France, Winogradsky, a professional for just two years, looked like the soft touch everyone expected him to be when Edberg jumped to a 4-1 lead.

But the match shifted dramatically as Winogradsky boomed his service and put away his volleys.

“I just did not play very well,” said Edberg, who claimed he wasn’t bothered by a groin injury suffered last week. “The court was very heavy. That’s the second time in a row I’ve lost in the second round.

“Nothing seemed to work today. I knew I would have problems with him from the start. I just could not get his serve back.”

Top-seeded and defending champion Ivan Lendl beat Jonathan Canter, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2; the second-seeded Becker of West Germany downed Diego Perez, 6-0, 6-1, 7-5; eighth-seeded Jimmy Connors ousted Todd Nelson, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, and Tarik Benhabiles of France upset No. 13 Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.

In other matches, No. 10 Andres Gomez of Ecuador beat Thierry Champion of France, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2; No. 11 Kent Carlsson of Sweden defeated Arnaud Boetsch of France, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, and No. 14 Martin Jaite of Argentina beat Thierry Pham of France, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

In other women’s matches, second-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany turned back Iva Budarova of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-1; sixth-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Dianne Balestrat of Australia, 6-2, 6-0; Canada’s Helena Kelesi upset No. 11 Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden, 7-5, 7-5; Stephanie Rehe surprised No. 13 Mary Jo Fernandez, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4; seventh-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina beat Linda Ferrando of Italy, 6-2, 6-4; No. 10 Kathy Rinaldi beat Julie Halard of France, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, and No. 14 Raffaella Reggi beat Sara Gomer of Britain, 6-3, 6-3.
