Jurors in the retrial of Sagon Penn wrapped up their 17th day of deliberations Thursday without reaching a verdict. The jury will not be meeting today, a court holiday, and will resume deliberations Monday.
Penn, 25, faces five felony counts in the March, 1985, shooting death of San Diego Police Agent Thomas Riggs and the wounding of Agent Donovan Jacobs and civilian ride-along Sarah Pina-Ruiz.
The defense claims that Penn, who is black, fired in self-defense against an unprovoked, racially motivated attack launched by Jacobs.
