SPORTSSCOPE : 3 Valley Stars Selected for Prep Shrine Football Classic

Three players from the San Gabriel Valley have been selected to play in the 36th Shrine All-Star Football Classic on Aug. 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Running back Eric Bieniemy of Bishop Amat High and linebackers Tony Crutchfield of Muir and Ken Lopez of Los Altos will play for the South against Northern California all-stars. The game involves many of the top graduated high school seniors in the state.

At 5-8 and 185, Bieniemy is the smallest player for the South. He has strength and speed and rushed for a San Gabriel Valley record of 2,001 yards and 28 touchdowns in 245 carries last season--an average of 8.1 yards. Headed for the University of Colorado, he rushed for a school-record 4,882 yards and 64 touchdowns at Amat.

Crutchfield and Lopez were two of the top defensive players in the valley.

The 5-11 and 185-pound Crutchfield was the defensive leader and top tackler on a Muir squad that won its second consecutive CIF Coastal Conference championship. The All-CIF performer is expected to switch from linebacker to strong safety at Brigham Young in the fall.

Lopez, 6-2 and 185, was regarded as the most talented defensive player on a Los Altos squad that won the CIF Eastern Conference championship. Lopez, who has yet to choose a college, led the Conquerors with 20 quarterback sacks and four fumble recoveries and was among the leaders in tackles and interceptions.

Cal State Los Angeles distance runner Sylvia Mosqueda has been selected to compete in the 1,500-meter run at the Olympic Sports Festival from July 24 to 26 in Durham, N.C.

Mosqueda, a standout at San Gabriel High, was impressive in the event at the National Track and Field Championships in June with a school-record mark of 4:16.09 (11th place in the meet). She also finished third in the 5,000-meter run.

Three former Cal State L.A. women earned berths on the U.S. team for the World Championships in August in Rome with strong performances at the nationals: Diane Williams in the 100-meter dash, Jennifer Innis in the long jump and Denean Howard in the 400-meter run.

Williams won the 100 in 10.9 seconds, Innis was second in the long jump at 22-1 3/4 and Howard third in the 400 in 51.02.

Two standouts from the San Gabriel Valley are among 20 golfers who have qualified for the 88th annual Southern California Golf Assn. Championship from July 17 to 19 at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.

The qualifiers are Bob May, a standout at Los Altos High in Hacienda Heights for the last three years, and defending champion Dave Sheff of San Marino, a former touring pro who regained his amateur status last year.

The qualifying meet for the other 64 berths will be played Monday at South Hills Country Club in West Covina. Twenty-one San Gabriel Valley golfers are among the 104 players.
