A California Highway Patrol officer clearing an injury accident on the Artesia Freeway in Lakewood was bitten by a dog suspected of having rabies, authorities said. Officer John Arbogast was treated at Doctors Hospital of Lakewood for severe lacerations to his right hand and released, Officer Tom Coleman said. The dog, a Labrador retriever mix, was sent to the Southern California Humane Society in Lakewood where it underwent tests to determine if it had rabies, Coleman said. Officers suspect the dog had rabies because of its “skittish” behavior. Officers used a tag found on the dog to locate its owner in Lakewood. The owner’s name was not released.
