Irvine : UCI Science Institute Will Expand This Year

A $300,000 state grant will enable elementary and high school science teachers throughout the state to take part in a UC Irvine’s Summer Science Institute this year, university officials said.

In previous years, the science institute was primarily for teachers from the Orange County area. But UCI officials said the new state grant will allow 70 elementary and 30 high school teachers from outside Orange County to join with 70 teachers from the county during this summer’s four-week training session.

This year’s Summer Science Institute opens July 27.

The program is designed to help science teachers keep abreast of new developments and uses experts from industry, in addition to the science and engineering faculty at UCI.

Mare Taagepera, director of the institute and a UCI chemistry lecturer, said a major focus of this year’s science program will be training elementary teachers to implement California’s new science curriculum.

Special sessions also will be held on such topics as mental illness, earthquake risks and computers in science education.
