Pope Decries Murder of Bishop, Nun in Ecuador

VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II on Thursday condemned the murders of a Spanish bishop and a Colombian nun by Ecuadorean Indians and said they were the victims of “unjustifiable violence.”
A telegram sent by the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, to the head of Ecuador’s bishops conference, Msgr. Antonio Zumarraga, on the pontiff’s behalf, said the Pope had been deeply saddened to hear of the deaths.
The bodies of Bishop Alejandro Labaca Ugarte, 67, and Sister Ines Arango, who were killed with poison-tipped spears, were found near an Indian community in the Amazon jungle of eastern Ecuador.
