Confusing the Issues

With regard to “The Adoption Debate” (by Elizabeth Mehren, Nov. 25, 1987), I submit the following:
Instead of raising the question of private versus agency adoption, it seems more pertinent to scrutinize the bar exam and qualifications that would allow a person like Joel Steinberg to practice law.
Remember, Lisa’s birth mother selected Steinberg as an attorney--not as a prospective adoptive parent. I suspect no birth mother in her right mind would knowingly turn a child over to a person like Steinberg.
If a birth mother selects adoptive parents for her child and a reputable attorney is involved in the adoption process, the adoptive parents are scrutinized by the state every bit as carefully in a private adoption as they are in an agency adoption.
