Gunmen linked to the Communist New People’s Army killed two Philippine soldiers and two civilians just before a Christmas truce expired with the government of President Corazon Aquino. A military spokesman said the four victims were together Friday night in a restaurant near the Bulacan province town of Malolos, 20 miles north of Manila, when a pair of men entered and shot them with .45-caliber pistols, then fled in a stolen jeep. Col. Leandro Mendoza, constabulary commander in the province, said the gunmen’s weapons and style of attack were typical of New People’s Army guerrillas. The rebels and the government had announced moratoriums on attacks on Christmas Day.
