San Diego Radio, TV Stations Earn 16 Golden Mike Awards

San Diego radio and television stations picked up 16 of 58 Golden Mike awards last week from the Radio and Television News Assn. of Southern California.
Topping the list of seven local winners honored at the broadcast group’s 38th annual awards banquet in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel are news/talk radio station KSDO-AM (1130) and KGTV-TV Channel 10, with four Golden Mikes each.
This year’s competition, which covered broadcasts airing between Nov. 1, 1986, and Oct. 30, 1987, involved 129 radio and 211 television entries from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Entries were divided into two categories for radio and three for television, depending on the size of the newsroom staffs.

KSDO: Best Specialized Segment, Division A, for “About San Diego”; Best News Interview Program, Division A, for “Tax Reform ‘87: Boom or Boondoggle”; Best Use of Feature Sound, Division A, for “J.F.K.--A Tribute.”
(KSDO also shared an award for Best Special Programming, Division C, in the television category for “AIDS: The San Diego Story,” which was simulcast with KPBS-TV Channel 15.)
Adult-contemporary (A/C) station KFMB-AM (760): Best Special News Broadcast, Division A, for “AIDS Awareness Test”; Best Original News Commentary or Analysis, Division A.
A/C station KYXY-FM (96.5): Best Specialized Segment, Division B, for “A Day in the Life of . . . “
TELEVISION
KGTV Channel 10: Best Original News Commentary or Analysis (one division) for “Brothers”; Best Investigative Reporting, Division B, for “Frigemate Bust”; Best News Reporting, Division B, for “Nicaragua: Behind the Lines”; Best Station Editorial or Series of Editorials (one division) for “Bay Responsibilities.”
KFMB Channel 8: Best Spot News Reporting, Division B; Best Documentary, Division B, for “When Home Is Where the Hurt Is”; Best Specialized Segment, Division B, for “First Person.”
KCST Channel 39: Best News Broadcast, 30 minutes, Division B; Best Live Coverage of a News Story, Division B, for coverage of the Whittier earthquake.
KPBS Channel 15: Best Special News Programming, Division C, for “AIDS: The San Diego Story” (with KSDO).
