Union Pacific posted income of $583 million for 1987, a turnaround from a loss of $460 million in 1986. The New York-based company credited strong performances in both its rail and energy businesses for the gain. It noted that there was a $1.7-billion restructuring charge in 1986 and that the 1987 figures include a $57-million special credit.
